ACL Band Spotlight Vol. 1

So, as I previously noted, every year there are a smattering of bands on the Austin City Limits (ACL) bill that I have no or very little knowledge of. So I thought I would use the time leading up to the festival to spotlight some, if not most or all of the bands playing this year. All of this in the quest to get the very most out of my three days and soak up all of the great music available.

Since the line-up was just released today, I thought we would start by just dipping our toes in the water with the two headliners who weren’t previously leaked through the ACL Lotto Tickets.  Those would be Stevie Wonder and Coldplay.

I must admit, when I first heard rumblings that Stevie Wonder was a possible headliner, I grumbled a bit thinking he just didn’t fit the typical ACL headliner mold.  But the more I’ve thought about it, he may not be typical of the festival, but he is legendary and having the opportunity to see him live is one I certainly wouldn’t pass up.  And then I pulled up my Stevie Wonder playlist on my iPod, and realized that this could be one killer set.  Needless to say, my attitude has changed.

So to kick things off, here is Stevie Wonder, Superstitious.

Next up, Coldplay. I have this weird love/hate thing with Coldplay that is really mostly just total love, if you know what I mean.  They have come through Dallas a couple of times but tickets were always so expensive that I just couldn’t wrap my head around shelling that much out to see them.  The Brits are famous for their emotion-driven music that seems to find a place in any romantic, or gut-wrenchingly difficult, situation. They are one of those bands that really takes you to the seed of the emotion that birthed the song they are playing.

Do any of you watch So You Think You Can Dance? Last season, choreographer Travis Wall created one of the most beautiful lyrical dance pieces I’ve seen in a very long time, and it was to Coldplay’s song Fix You.  That piece conveyed not only the emotion of the dancers, but the emotion of the musicians as well–and it reinvigorated my appreciation for the band (and made me desperately miss dancing!).

So, again, a headliner I was surprised to see on the ACL bill, but one I am admittedly truly excited to see! Enjoy…

Coldplay, Violet Hill

and just because I could watch it over and over again…

So who should I highlight next? Two down, only 114 bands and 87 days to go!
