Happy Birthday to one of my all-time favorite artists, Mark Rothko. Born in Russia in 1903, he would have been 109 years old today. Thanks to the Guggenheim twitter feed for bringing the special day to my attention!
I’m not sure I could pinpoint exactly what it is about his work that captivates me so, other than I have a very emotional response to each piece. There is such depth, so many layers, and complex stories in his work. They are not simply blocks of color as some would suggest. The seem to breathe, to sing, to cry, to laugh…there is much soul found in the brush strokes of each work. And seeing them in person is such an experience I think. One of my bucket list items is to see the Rothko Chapel in Houston some day. It’s right down the road (ish), there’s no reason not to see it.
Are you a Rothko fan?
