I saw Nicole Atkins for the first time back in oh 2007 I think–she is this petite little thing with a giant voice that could slay dragons. I fell in love with her first album and played it over and over again. After signing, and then splitting, with her record label, I’d started to lose hope that we’d ever get a new album from the pint-sized warbler. And then, at long last, rumblings started up that the new Nicole Atkins album was due early this year.
Mondo Amore dropped in January of this year and is definitely a departure from her first album, Neptune City. It’s darker, grittier with a unique sound, but holds all the soul that was bursting from the first. After fighting to have her own voice heard through the noise of the music industry, she has finally arrived with a perspective all her own, and an album that embodies the music she was born to sing.
So dive in already.
Here’s Vultures, the first single off of Mondo Amore.
…and for old time’s sake, one of my favorites off of her first album, The Way It Is.
For all of you Dallas kids, Nicole Atkins will be playing tonight (Tues, June 14) at Dada in Deep Ellum. $10 cover and doors open at 8:00 pm. Maybe I’ll see you there!
